During this time of transition, as we await the selection of our next Senior Minister, the Church Council has hired a Transitional Minister Team to be comprised of The Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes and The Rev. Dr. Paul H. Sherry to lead The Riverside Church effective January 6th, 2014. Rev. Dr. James Forbes will serve as the Transitional Senior Minister and will be the primary Sunday Morning Preacher. Rev. Dr. Paul Sherry will serve as the Transitional Operations Minister and will oversee the daily operational and administrative functions of the church.
The Rev. Dr. James Alexander Forbes, Jr. is Senior Minister Emeritus of The Riverside Church and President of the Healing of the Nations Foundation.
Forbes, who was installed as the fifth Senior Minister of Riverside on June 1, 1989, and retired on June 1, 2007, was the first African-American to serve as Senior Minister of this multicultural congregation. He is an ordained minister in the American Baptist Churches and the Original United Holy Church of America.
From October, 2010 through June 2012, The Rev. Dr. Paul H. Sherry was the Director of Interfaith Worker Justice. Working out of IWJ's Washington DC office, he spearheaded IWJ's work on the current unemployment crisis. Dr. Sherry currently serves as President of the Board of Interfaith Worker Justice, and has held this position since January 2013.
Dr. Sherry was the President of the United Church of Christ from 1989 to 1999. From 2000 to 2005 he served as a consultant to the Center for Community Change and from 2003 to 2007 as the Coordinator of the Anti-Poverty Program of the National Council of Churches. During that same period he was the Executive Director of the Let Justice Roll Living Wage Campaign. In the Spring of 2008 he was a visiting lecturer at Union Theological Seminary in New York City where he taught a course entitled "Faith Based Bodies and Social Transformation."
