In the liturgical calendar, the season of Lent is a forty day journey to the cross—a time set aside for confession and reflection, as we consider the price Jesus paid to bring a message of hope and reconciliation to our world. It is a time when we are invited into opportunities, both individually and as a community, to consider how we might reflect, repent, repair the places, the practices, and the relationships in our lives that need to change.
Riverside clergy, staff, and members have assembled some thoughts and reflections to walk alongside us through Lent.

Tenebrae, meaning “shadows” is an adaptation of a medieval office traditionally sung during Holy Week. The church is fully lit at the beginning of the service of worship. The lights are dimmed as worship continues until, at the end, there is total darkness except for the Christ Candle on the altar. The gradual extinguishing of the lights and the candles is symbolic of the flight of the disciples and the resentment of the world leading to the final isolation of Jesus on the cross. At the conclusion of the final motet by the choir, the Christ Candle is carried out, recalling the crucifixion, and the tolling of the 33 bells, symbolizing the years of Jesus’s life, is begun. The Christ Candle is carried to Gethsemane Chapel and will be carried in at the beginning of the Resurrection Day procession.
