World AIDS Day 2008

Time: 5:00PM - 7:30PM Location: Nave Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise 2008On the eve of World AIDS Day, Emmy Award winning journalist Bill McCreary along with the Reverend Dr. Brad R. BraxtonSenior Minister of The Riverside Church and Speaker of the New York City Council Christine Quinn will observe the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day by hosting Keep The Promise 2008.Launched in 1988 and in partnership with The Riverside Church and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), World AIDS Day brings individuals and organizations from around the world together to bring attention to the global AIDS epidemic. The event commemorates the lives of the 25 million who have died from AIDS and looks to improve the lives of the 33 million people worldwide who are living with HIV today. In this educational and touching program, audience members will be filled with hope as UNAIDS in New York, national and international leaders come together to rededicate themselves to Keep the Promise of combating HIV/AIDS. Guests will join in the salute to the 10th anniversary of UNAIDS, learn about America’s national plan to combat HIV and AIDS and increase awareness of the disease and have the chance to participate in a candle light remembrance. The Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, of the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, and Dr. Monica Sweeney, the Assistant Commissioner for the Bureau of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will address attendees, and guests will enjoy the sounds of the Lavender Light Gospel Choir, a racially diverse choir composed of mostly African-American lesbians and gays.
