Filmmaker Julia Haslett sought an answer in the life of the controversial French activist, thinker, and Christian mystic, Simone Weil (1909-1943) – a woman the French philosopher Albert Camus described as “the only great spirit or our time.” In Weil, faith and social justice meet. She spent most of her short life advocating for the rights of the socially and politically disadvantaged. She also served on the Republican side against the fascists in the Spanish Civil War and in the French resistance against the Nazi occupation of France during World War II. At the same time, she was a Christian mystic and religious thinker who wrote profoundly on faith in such books as Waiting for God and Gravity and Grace. Nor did she limit herself to Christianity. Long before interfaith dialogue was the norm for progressive Christians, she explored Buddhism and Hinduism, teaching herself Sanskrit so she could read the Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita in the original language. Followed by Q&A with Julia Haslett, The Rev. Stephen H. Phelps, Sylvie Weil (niece of Simone Weil) and Soraya Broukhim (the actress who portrays Simone Weil in the film). "Revolution, not Religion, is the opiate of the people” - Simone Weil |
