Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick (1878 - 1969) became minister elect. Dr. Fosdick was a key figure in the debate between modernists and fundamentalism. Requirements for membership were: affirmation of faith in Christ, Christians regardless of denomination must be welcome, a new and larger building must be planned. He retired in 1946.
