Dr. Thomas Armitage (1819-1896) became pastor; he retired after 40 years, in 1888. Born in Yorkshire, England, he was a Methodist. He came to America in 1838 and became a Baptist. He was president of the American Bible Union and wrote “History of the Baptists” in 1886.
